ACA Step-by-step

Finding coverage through the ACA Marketplace doesn’t have to be stressful. Whether you’re between jobs, self-employed, or just need affordable health insurance, we’ll help you explore your options and see if you qualify for savings. Let’s make sure you and your family stay covered with a plan that actually fits your life and your budget.

What is ACA coverage?

Affordable Care Act, or the Health Insurance Marketplace, are policies regulated and held to certain standards set by the government.

This includes coverage of pre-existing conditions, offering free preventive care, and putting a cap on out-of-pocket costs. The goal of ACA is to have affordable health insurance for the widest demographics in the US. Depending on your income and household size you can qualify for subsidies to lower your cost even more.

To apply for ACA you will need:

  • U.S. Citizenship status or lawful presence

  • Live in the U.S.

  • Not have eligible coverage from job/Medicaid

Where do I start?

  • What is covered? Do I have to pay?

All Marketplace plans cover things like doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and some preventive services like vaccines and screenings.

How much you pay depends on your income and the plan you pick. Many people qualify for discounts that lower their monthly payments and out-of-pocket costs. We represent the top carriers and can help you figure out what’s covered and what fits your needs and budget.

  • Am I Eligible?

Most people living in the U.S. legally can qualify for Marketplace health coverage, and your income helps determine what plans and savings you’re eligible for. Whether you’re between jobs, self-employed, or just don’t have health insurance through work, there’s likely a plan for you.

  • What do I need to apply?

Applying for Marketplace coverage is pretty straightforward. You’ll just need some basic info like your household income, Social Security numbers for everyone applying, and details about any other health coverage/needs you have such as doctors you see or medications.

  • When can I apply? When does my coverage start?

You can apply for Marketplace coverage during Open Enrollment each Fall, or anytime you have a major life event like losing coverage, moving, or having a baby which could qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. Your coverage can start as soon as the first of the next month after you enroll under normal circumstances. We’ll help you figure out your timing so there’s no gap in your coverage.

FAQ

I’m already sick and keep getting rejected from plans. Do I have any options?

Marketplace plans can’t deny you or charge you more because of pre-existing conditions. Whether you’re managing a chronic illness or facing a new diagnosis, you still have access to full coverage for doctor visits, prescriptions, and hospital care.

We’ll help you find a plan that fits your needs and budget, and if you need extra help with costs, we’ll check if you qualify for financial assistance or even Medicaid in your state.

Do I need to be a US citizen?

You don’t have to be a U.S. citizen, but you do need to be lawfully present in the U.S. to qualify for Marketplace coverage. For more information on non-citizen coverage please check the healthcare.gov qualification options.

What is the “best plan”?

The “best plan” really depends on you—your health needs, budget, and which doctors or hospitals you want to use. Some people want the lowest monthly payment, while others prefer lower costs when they go to the doctor.

I recently moved, what should I do to cover my family?

Moving will qualify you for a Special Enrollment period to change your health plan throughout the year.

I lost my job’s health plan… now what?

You’ve got options. You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to get a Marketplace plan, or you could look into COBRA or Medicaid depending on your situation.
